Q: When it comes to losing weight, is 100 calories of beer equal to 100 calories of nuts?
A: No, when it comes to beer and nuts, a calorie doesn’t equal a calorie because of the following reasons:
- Our body metabolizes alcohol differently from food. Ninety percent of alcohol is metabolized in the liver, and this can make weight loss tricky because our body recognizes the byproducts of alcohol as something foreign and potentially dangerous. This makes our bodies work diligently to metabolize the alcohol as quickly as possible. Alcohol immediately becomes the priority on our body’s “digestion list” while the digestion of nutrient-dense food is now put on the back burner. Ultimately, this increases the risk that nutrient-dense foods will be stored.
- Beer and nuts containing the same number of calories still vary. While a light beer and a handful of nuts each roughly contain 100 calories, they are very different when it comes to metabolism. This is because nuts contain fiber, protein, and fat among other nutrients, which also makes them better for maintaining your blood sugar level.
